You can make a considerable contribution and be of great help to the children if you decide to purchase these cards. There is a choice of seven different motives of the children-made, New Year’s Eve’s cards. The cards with the motives I, II and III are greeting cards (with the size 20 h10 cm). Each card costs 20 denars and an envelope is included in the price. The remaining four motives are available on postcards (with the size 16 h 11cm) and their price is 10 denars. Scade il 06/01/2006	Central European University - Department of Legal Studies - CEU Budapest Justice Initiative Fellows Program at Central European University (2006 - 2008 session) The Open Society Justice Initiative, an operational program of the Open Society Institute (OSI), joins Central European University (CEU) in announcing the Justice Initiative Fellows Program for 2006-2008. The aim of the program is to support and further develop a network of lawyers and activists working on human rights-related issues internationally. The Human Rights Fellows Program is a two-year program of study and practical work experience. Up to 10 applicants will be selected in 2006 to participate in the program. Applicants from the following regions are eligible: Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Central/South America. Applicants must be nominated by a non-governmental organization (NGO) concerned with human rights that will sponsor the applicant as a Justice Initiative Fellow with a defined role within the organization. Applicants selected for the Fellowship will be required to sign an agreement with the Justice Initiative committing themselves to the program for two years. The first year is spent at Central European University, the second in the applicant's home country, working with the nominating NGO. Fellowship applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to human rights, and have a university degree and a high degree of proficiency in English. Criteria for selection will include the applicant's experience, his/her potential to contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights, and the suitability of the applicant's proposed role in the nominating NGO. Human Rights Fellows will reside for one year in Hungary at CEU's Legal Studies Department. They will undertake a degree program (M.A. or LL.M. in Human Rights, depending on their undergraduate degree), in which they will be required to fulfill the requirements of the Human Rights Program at Central European University. During their stay at CEU, the Fellows will also participate in a three-month internship placement with leading NGOs in Europe from January until March. During the first year of the program the Justice Initiative Fellowship will be administered by CEU Legal Studies Department in partnership with the Justice Initiative. Financial conditions will be identical to CEU policies for full scholarship students. Human Rights Fellows will return to their nominating NGOs after the first year, where they will spend at least one year working in human rights advocacy on a non-profit basis: providing legal services, undertaking human rights litigation, and providing training and education. The Justice Initiative will pay a local salary during the second year equal to an amount determined to be similar to equivalent work by the nominating NGO. This amount will be provided to the nominating NGOs in the form of a grant. Application Procedure Please note that applicants must submit their applications to the CEU Admissions Office (1051 Budapest, Nador Street 9, Hungary). They must meet the general CEU Admissions requirements, which can be viewed online (http://www.ceu.hu/admissions.html), as well as the CEU Legal Studies Department Requirements (http://www.ceu.hu/legal/admissions.html). In addition, applicants must include the following with their application: 1. A nominating letter from an NGO describing the reasons for nominating the applicant, the expectations the NGO has of the project, and contractually committing (to the Justice Initiative) to hire the applicant for at least one year after s/he returns from the twelve-month training program in Hungary. The nomination letter should also indicate a monthly salary gross rate in USD (including all taxes and fees) that will be offered to the applicant by the NGO in the event that s/he is selected for the program (provided to the NGO by the Justice Initiative in the form of a grant). 2. A copy of the applicant's Bar Association membership (if applicable), or the date scheduled for examination. 3. Proof of English Proficiency (if available). If no language test has been taken, a test will be carried out during the application procedure (exact dates to be determined). For applicants from the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe, language tests will be carried out by local Soros Foundation/Open Society Institute coordinators. The program offers a wide selection of courses that provide a complex theoretical grounding in problems associated with nationhood and nationalism combined with advanced training in the methodology of applied social science. The training is intended to develop the participants' understanding of public interest law and introduce skills essential for strategic litigation. Strategic litigation is based upon the concept of public interest law, which is a conscious attempt to use litigation as a tool for achieving social change. While one of the foci is assisting individual victims to obtain redress, a major factor in the selection of cases to be filed is the expected strategic impact that a case is likely to have in terms of drawing public attention to an issue, creating favourable precedents in domestic and/or international fora and even triggering legislative reform. The European Roma Rights Centre is an international public interest law organisation engaging in a range of activities aimed at combating anti-Romani racism and human rights abuse of Roma. The approach of the ERRC involves, in particular, strategic litigation, international advocacy, research and policy development, and human rights training of Romani activists. The Roma Community Center "DROM" is a professional non-governmental organization, which represents and stimulates the active participation and integration of Romani people on the principles of the modern multiethnic European society. Its activities focus on human rights, lobbying, education and employment. Scade il 15/01/2006	Novità! Al Banco di Garabombo da oggi trovate le scarpe della CUC (Cooperativa Unidos por el Calzados), una fabbrica recuperata della zona industriale di Buenos Aires. Nel 2002 in seguito alla crisi economica, lo stabilimento che un tempo produceva anche per grandi marchi dell’abbigliamento sportivo, è stato costretto alla chiusura, sorte toccata a centinaia di altre fabbriche in tutto il paese. I lavoratori hanno così fondato una cooperativa, hanno preso in mano la gestione della fabbrica e hanno rimesso in movimento le macchine, per poter continuare a vivere e a generare benessere per il paese. Insieme agli amici dell’Arci e di Libera e della rivista il ponte della Lombardia, promotori della Carovana Antimafie, e ai sindacalisti della Fillea Cgil della Lombardia si è voluto approfondire e far conoscere all’intera città la realtà del cantiere edile, paradigma nel suo sfruttamento e nella sua precarizzazione del lavoro di oggi e della società globalizzata. In alcune piazze di Milano alle sei del mattino era possibile incrociare decine se non centinaia di ragazzi e adulti marocchini o egiziani, rumeni o albanesi, in attesa del caporale che dopo veloce contrattazione smistava il suo carico umano in uno dei tanti cantieri della nostra città e regione; ora, dopo diverse denunce e iniziative sopratutto dei sindacalisti e della Carovana Antimafie, il mercato delle braccia è diventato più sotterraneo, ma non meno efficace. Del resto questo dell’edilizia è uno dei pochi settori trainanti di questa economia in declino: grandi infrastrutture come la Tav o la nuova Fiera, il recupero delle aree dismesse come il Portello o l’Innocenti, i piccole e medi cantieri di una politica urbanistica milanese e lombarda a dir poco sfrenata per cui si costruisce dappertutto sotto (i box) e sopra (mansarde); l’importante è dar fiato alla bolla speculativa del mattone, poi si vedrà. E allora perchè stupirsi se delle persone, spesso senza permesso di soggiorno, vengono reclutati a 3 euro all’ora con il caporale che spesso ne trattiene più della metà, se nei nostri cantieri si raggiungono percentuali di lavoro nero pari al 40% e in alcuni casi oltre la metà; buona parte di questa città rischia di essere un cantiere precarizzato che oggi c’è e domani non si sa: i giovani dei call center, i lavoratori dei centri commerciali e di molti servizi o agenzie, le migliaia di co.co.co e dei nuovi rapporti di lavoro della legge 30 perfino tantissime partite Iva. Perchè stupirsi se dei ragazzi vengono sbattuti nei cantieri, senza formazione e senza nessuna misura di sicurezza: siamo il paese con la più alta percentuale di incidenti sul lavoro; situazioni assurde come il simulare incidenti stradali o risse tra marocchini, quando si verificano gravi e spesso mortali infortuni nei cantieri periferici, sono meno rari di quel che si pensa; in quelli più grandi e importanti si ha la fortuna di un immediato soccorso e di un commento sui giornali del giorno dopo. Queste vite da cantiere sono raccontate nel libro; il mercato delle braccia, l’infiltrazione delle varie mafie è documentato da semplici lavoratori, sindacalisti, magistrati e associazioni. Le classi dirigenti, i ceti politici di Milano e Lombardia nelle varie consultazioni elettorali, primarie comprese, farebbero bene ad interrogarsi del perchè siamo giunti a questo punto e se non è il caso di fermarsi e invertire la rotta. ********************************* Anzichè tenere i tuoi libri fermi e inutilizzati, falli circolare! rendili utili ! Budget line / available budget: 15.05.01 / 108.445.000 Euros Objectives and supported actions in the field of ENAR´s work The YOUTH programme is the EU mobility and non-formal education programme targeting young people aged between 15 and 25 years. It offers young people opportunities for mobility and active participation in the construction of Europe. It aims to create a European arena for cooperation in the development of youth policy, based on non-formal education. It also encourages the concept of lifelong learning and the development of skills and competencies which promote active citizenship. The Programme pursues the following objectives: * Facilitating the integration of young people into society at large and encouraging their spirit of initiative. * Helping young people acquire knowledge, skills and competencies, and recognising the value of such experience. * Allowing young people to give free _expression to their sense of solidarity in Europe and the wider world, as well as supporting the fight against racism and xenophobia. * Promoting a better understanding of the diversity of our common European culture and shared heritage as well as of our common basic values. * Helping to eliminate all forms of discrimination and promoting equality at all levels of society. * Introducing a European element into projects which will have a positive impact on youth work at local level. A key priority is to give young people with less opportunities (from a less-privileged cultural, geographical or socio-economic background, or with disabilities) access to the mobility and non-formal education activities developed within the YOUTH programme (please ask your National Agency for the Strategy for the inclusion of young people with less opportunities into YOUTH). Scade il 01/02/2006	Dear Friends, We are writing to you on behalf of the Anti-Racism Information Service (ARIS) based in Geneva, Switzerland. ARIS is a non-sectarian, non-profit organization whose aim is to make the United Nations international Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) more “user-friendly” to local, national and international non-governmental organizations. Our work involves lobbying the members of the United Nations Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) on behalf of organizations who are unable to represent themselves at the twice-yearly meetings of the Committee. At each three or four-week session, around fifteen countries are discussed, either with representatives of the respective governments presenting reports on governmental actions taken in the past four years to combat racism, or with reviews of earlier reports. At the sessions, ARIS makes available to the experts recent NGO publications and documentation concerning racism and xenophobia in the countries that are being discussed that day. Often NGO materials can raise issues that may not be raised by government officials, and thus NGO documents help the experts on the Committee in forming a balanced view of racism in states parties. Fruitful and often animated discussions take place between governments and experts on this basis. The next session of CERD is due to take place from 20 FEBRUARY to 10 MARCH, 2006. We believe your organization might want to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to combat racism at the highest international level by sending us any information on these countries. We make it available not only to the members of the CERD, but also to other NGOs and interested individuals who will be able to use it to further the defence of human rights throughout the world. We also make it part of our Documentation Centre. Our files cover the 166 countries that have signed the Convention as well as several other regions and ethnic groups. You can now find information about our documentation on our website ( www.antiracism-info.org) and ask there for publications. The information you can submit to the Committee through ARIS can be of any length, from an article in a newsletter to entire books. Case studies and statistics are also a very powerful way of bringing the Committee’s attention to racism in states parties. Documents should discuss racial discrimination in any form: in the workplace, in schools, in government, in literature, and in society in general. According to article 2 of the Convention, “racial discrimination” refers to “any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin”. Please note that all information submitted to the Committee through ARIS will be attributed to the originating organization, unless otherwise specified. For practical reasons, documents in English are preferred, although those in French and Spanish can also be of interest to some members of the Committee and are of great importance to our Documentation Center. Scade il 28/02/2006	I am writing to share an opportunity with you about possible internships, especially for organizations looking to gain from the experiences of others. Each year, the International Human Rights Internship Program (IHRIP) provides funding to support human rights internships worldwide. See below for a bit more info and the web site address. The IHRIP Professional Development and Exchange Project funds for three types of professional development projects for staff of human rights organizations: - professional attachments, - on-site training, and - study tours. These projects focus on learning about human rights substantively through strategy and skill development. The projects range in length of time from 1 week to 4 months, depending on the project and needs of the organization. Professional Attachments are the most common grant awarded by IHRIP. These projects run from 1-4 months and consist of an organization’s staff member working for another organization for an extended period of time in order to gain real skill development. Non-staff administrative costs of the host organization are covered by IHRIP. On-site Trainings are very focused and aim at getting knowledge across. IHRIP provides funding for a trainer to visit an organization to obtain training on a specific topic that directly addresses the needs and priorities of their organization. These projects are usually 1-2 weeks in length, providing for dissemination of knowledge, but little practice of the skill. Study tours are useful for comparative purposes. They tend to last less than a month, allowing staff to visit other organizations in order to exchange ideas and thoughts on strategies and practices. These projects enable different organizations to collaborate together in order to mutually advance their organizations. These grants are highly competitive, and the application process is rigorous, however if you feel the needs of your organization fit within the criteria of the funding opportunity I strongly encourage you to apply. There are three application deadlines (February 28, June 30, and October 31) but are reviewed when they arrive. All applications must by supported by an organization. If you decide to apply, the focus of the proposed project should be as narrow as possible, focusing on strategy and skill development. You need to express what you want to learn and how it will strengthen your organization. Good luck! And, if you receive an internship, please let us know about new tactics you learn about and incorporate into your organization’s work. It sounds like a good resource for your organization to learn about a new tactic. Here’s what they say on their web site: "A key aspect of the projects IHRIP supports is the exchange of knowledge and experience among organizations and activists in different countries. Now I live in Brussels, trying to attend every possible conference on the subject because I am really interested in it. It is inviting aspiring journalists to investigate the reality behind the headlines concerning refugees and asylum seekers. Three winners will be invited to Brussels to meet with the members of the jury who are all experienced journalists in this area. The overall winner will be offered the opportunity to visit Kenya for 12 days in the summer of 2006 to broaden his/her knowledge of asylum and refugees issues. JRS Eastern Africa will organise meetings with refugees, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and local media, in Nairobi and in Kakuma Refugee Camp. “Refugees and asylum seekers coming to Europe repeatedly make headlines, but not all information given about them is true,” says Fr Jan Stuyt SJ, JRS Europe Director. “What is true is that every day there are people arriving in Europe who are fleeing persecution, that some European governments put these people behind bars, and that often the numbers of new arrivals make headlines and the stories behind the sound-bites are lost. We want to challenge young journalists to tackle a significant humanitarian problem in Europe and to help break down misunderstandings and myths,” says Fr Stuyt. Students are asked to write an article of not more than 1,200 words on: ‘Refugees in Europe’. The competition is open to students at, or who have graduated during the last 12 months from, recognised institutes of higher education in Europe. The prize is a cash award of $500. The winning paper will be published, after any necessary revisions, in an issue of the journal Romani Studies. Papers written in English by graduate students beyond their first year of study and those holding the Ph.D. who are no more than three years beyond the awarding of the degree at the time of submission are eligible to compete. Any topic that would be deemed appropriate for the journal Romani Studies will be considered.
